Circuit Rider Training Program

Overview
The Circuit Rider Training Program (CRTP) is a capacity-building program that provides training and mentorship to operators of First Nations drinking water and wastewater systems. Qualified Circuit Rider Trainers rotate through First Nations communities to provide hands-on training, support certification, and help operators safely manage, maintain, and monitor their systems.

Trainers may also provide advice to Chiefs and Councils on developing and maintaining safe water systems and, in some communities, provide 24/7 emergency support.

The program helps First Nations:

• Build and maintain the capacity to manage water and wastewater systems.
• Improve the maintenance, management, and effectiveness of their systems.
• Reduce the number and duration of drinking water advisories.
• Maximize the service life of water and wastewater infrastructure.

Funding Amount
Indigenous Services Canada invests approximately $24 million annually in capacity-building initiatives for water and wastewater operators in First Nations communities, including more than $12 million per year for the Circuit Rider Training Program.

Eligibility / Who It’s For
Any First Nation that operates a public drinking water or wastewater system is automatically enrolled in the program and can request support from a Circuit Rider Trainer at any time.

Project Examples
Support may include:

• Hands-on water and wastewater operator training.
• Training and support to obtain or maintain certification.
• Monitoring and maintenance guidance.
• Advice on safe water system management.
• On-the-job capacity building.
• Emergency support, where available.
