On-Reserve Shelter Enhancement Program

Overview:

The On-Reserve Shelter Enhancement Program – Renovation supports First Nations communities in maintaining safe and accessible housing for individuals and families fleeing domestic violence. Funding helps cover repairs and renovations to existing emergency shelters and second-stage housing on reserve, ensuring these essential spaces remain safe, functional, and available to those in need. The program contributes to stronger community support systems and helps provide stable housing options for individuals transitioning toward independent living.

Funding Amount:

  • Up to $60,000 per unit or bed-unit being renovated.
  • Shelters and second-stage housing located in northern or remote on-reserve communities may be eligible for an additional 25% increase in funding.
  • Funding is provided as a forgivable loan, meaning repayment is not required if all program terms and conditions are met.
  • Any project costs exceeding the maximum funding amount are the responsibility of the First Nation or housing provider.
