Elementary and Secondary Education Program

Overview:
The Elementary and Secondary Education Program supports elementary and secondary education for eligible First Nations students ordinarily resident on reserve. The program works in partnership with First Nations to help improve education outcomes and close gaps between First Nations students and other Canadians.

Funding uses a formula-based approach designed to provide more stable and consistent support for First Nations students, schools, educators and communities. Funding can support language and culture, school food, full-day kindergarten, before- and after-school programming, menstrual products and student supports.

Funding Amount:
Funding is provided through interim regional funding formulas and transformative education agreements. Amounts are based on factors including the number of eligible students listed on the nominal roll and specific First Nations education cost drivers.

Who Can Apply:
Funding is provided directly to First Nations or to organizations designated by a First Nation, based on the number of eligible students listed on the nominal roll.

• Language and culture programming
• School food programming
• Full-day kindergarten for ages 4 and 5
• Before- and after-school programming
• Menstrual products for eligible students
• Student supports in First Nations and provincial schools
• Education supports that address factors such as school size and socio-economic conditions

Deadline:
Annual eligibility requirement: To be included on the nominal roll, a student must be eligible, registered for school and in regular attendance on the last instructional day of September in the school year.
